Stfford Springs, CT – With surrounding areas
battered by rain and a two hour rain a delay at
the speedway, it was amazing that the Carquest
Xtreme Tuesday show was completed. The Xtreme
saw the debut of the #74 for NEMA veteran Jeff
Horn after a major push to complete the car for
the special mid-week show. Both Bertrand cars
showed good speed in the practices and posted
good finishes in the heats.
The quick and clean, 30 lap feature was a
green to checkers run with no yellows in 9
minutes and 6 seconds for an average speed of
98.906 mph. Lapped cars were a challenge, with
some encountered twice during the race. Randy
battled his way past the #26b of Greg Stoehr and
the #7ny of Adam Cantor to take second place.
Jeff ran the #74 to a strong finish, passing the
#45 of Russ Stoehr for fifth place. Randy posted
a 17.650 sec lap, just a tick off winner Nokie
Fornoro's best of the race of 17.625. |

Cabral Beats
Teammate Newman at Lee USA Speedway |
Lee, NH – Randy Cabral passed Bertrand
Motorsports teammate Ryan Newman coming out of
turn two on lap 13 and went on to score a
convincing win in Friday night’s 25-lap
Northeastern Midget Association feature at Lee
USA Speedway.
After taking second on a lap 11 restart, Cabral
needed only two laps before slipping past NASCAR
Sprint Cup star Newman. Only a lap 22 caution
impeded his romp to a second win in as many 2009
races.
Cabral called grabbing second on the restart as
key to the win, his first ever at Lee. Lining up
third, he “just stayed on it and followed Ryan.
It was one of those let’s see what happens
moves.”
Dropping Mike Keeler to third, Cabral was
immediately on Newman’s tail. The winning move
was swift. “Sure, I was aware it was Ryan
Newman,” he said. “He is a tremendous, very
talented driver, but I’ve raced with Nokie
Fornoro and Russ Stoehr and they’re not exactly
slouches.”
Russ Stoehr (Angelillo) passed Keeler on lap 17
and went on to claim third in a new chassis.
Adam Cantor (Cantor 7ny) came from 12th to claim
fifth
Newman, a one-time national Midget contender,
disappointed no one. After the initial start
resulted in a yellow, Ryan took off from the
outside pole and before yellow flew again had
half straightaway on Keeler. Further back,
contact as a result of hard racing between
Cabral and Greg Stoehr resulted in the latter
spinning in turns one and two.
“I feel like a idiot,” Cabral said of the
incident with Stoehr. “I drove it in too hard
and Greg checked up a little trying to get
around a lapped car. I ran into the back of him
and that is not my style.”
Cabral’s 13.834 was the fastest lap of the
feature. Keeler and Greg Stoehr were the heat
winners. |

Motorsports Prepares for Exciting Race Weekend |
The Bertrand
Motorsports team has been working until all
hours of the night over the past week preparing
for the upcoming Memorial holiday weekend!
Todd Bertrand will take his K&N
Engineering/Atlantic Coast Trailer Sales #48
Micro Sprint, along with father, Gill, out to
the Trailways Speedway
“Microracing.com” National Open, paying
out a total of over $10,000 to the ultimate
winner this weekend. Over 100 cars are currently
pre-registered. Todd will kick off the weekend
by practicing on Friday, and then will proceed
to qualifying and a 30 lap feature on Saturday,
followed by qualifying and a 50 lap feature
paying $5,000 to win on Sunday.
Also this weekend, Tim Bertrand and team will
take the K&N Engineering/Bertrand Motorsports
#47 and #39 midgets to
Monadnock Speedway for the team’s first
race of the NEMA season. Randy Cabral will work
to defend his 2008 championship in race one, and
the team has invited the feisty 63 year old
veteran, Jeff Horn, to join for the weekend
driving the #39 car in anticipation of the June
26th event at Lee Speedway with Ryan Newman at
the helm.
This past weekend was not as good as owner Tim
Bertrand would have hoped for his own racing
endeavors at Whip City
Speedway. Bertrand started second in his
heat race and was taken out on the initial start
by a young, eager competitor before even getting
underway. In the feature, Bertrand started 17th
and was running 7th after 3 laps, only to burn a
piston in the engine, ending his night.

supporters for their help as always – K&N

Bertrand, Cabral
Set To Defend Crowns |
NEMARacing.com Release - Brockton, MA - Tim
Bertrand and Randy Cabral #47 will begin defense
of their respective championships (owner and
driver) when the Northeastern Midget Association
begins the 2009 season Saturday night (May 23)
at Monadnock Speedway. It will be the 57th
season opener for NEMA.
“Rule changes have equaled competition up a
little bit and it has forced our team to be on
our game a little more,” says Bertrand. He
expects a torrid battle for the championships
that will include, among others, Nokie Fornoro
is the Mike Jarret #4, Russ Stoehr in the Gene
Angelillo #45 and Greg Stoehr in the family #26.
Other contenders include Erica Santos in the Ed
Breault #44 and Adam Cantor in the family #7ny.
“We are excited about beginning the defense of
our championships,” said Bertrand. “We expect it
to be difficult. Several cars have tested well.”
Getting off the mark with a strong effort will
be the concern for the likes of Doug and Brian
Cleveland, Chris Leonard, Andy Shlatz and Aaron
Wall.
Monadnock, which kicks off a 17-race agenda, is
one of the few tracks where Cabral and Bertrand
have not tasted victory. They have, however, won
three season openers including last year at
Waterford Speedbowl.
According to Bertrand, the #47 team has been
purposefully quiet over the off-season but has
hardly been idle over the past month. “We were
just not very good at Monadnock last year,”
Bertrand continues. “With the help of Lou
Cicconi, Danny Drinan and Glen Cabral, we have
made some significant chassis/suspension changes
on the Drinan chassis for Monadnock that we
believe will be hopeful for our overall short
track program. That’s all we’re saying for now
and will hope for the best.”
Greg Stoehr (2), Russ Stoehr and Fornoro have
all been winners at the tricky Monadnock that,
Bertrand says, “favors” the experienced, veteran
competitors. On the owner’s side, Angelillo is
far and away the leader with 12 wins, 11 with
the now retired Drew Fornoro. The last one came
last year with driver Joey Payne. |

Jeff Horn |

Ryan Newman |

Cole Carter |

Impressive “Guest
List” For Bertrand Team |
Brockton, MA -
Jeff Horn, a New England open-cockpit mainstay,
will be the first of several high profile names
to drive a Bertrand midget in 2009 Northeastern
Midget Association competition. Horn, who has 19
career NEMA wins, will drive the Esslinger-powered
#39 Drinan car at the club’s season opener
Saturday night May 23 at Monadnock Speedway.
Tim Bertrand and Randy Cabral, in the #47, will
begin defense of the owner and driver
championships at Monandock. It is the first of
17 races on the ’09 schedule.
According to Bertrand, current Sprint Cup
competitor and one-time USAC open-cockpit star
Ryan Newman will drive the #39 at Lee USA
Speedway on Friday night, June 26. Current USAC
driver Cole Carter, son of the legendary open
wheel chauffeur Pancho Carter, will drive at
Waterford Speedbowl on July 25 and at Seekonk’s
“Boston Louie” on Aug. 8 in a new car that is
currently being constructed.
Bertrand also said Newman is “tentatively
scheduled” to drive the car at Lee and Canaan
Speedways in September. There is also the
possibility of other drivers to appear within
the Bertrand stable in 2009 dependent upon
sponsorship opportunities that the team is
working on.
“Jeff Horn is the perfect choice to start this
program off,” said Bertrand. “We are there to
race but he’ll also be feeling the car out a
little bit for us to ensure Ryan has a solid
ride for Lee. Monadnock is a place where
experienced guys seem to do well and few guys
know the place better than Jeff. I also like
Jeff because he respects the equipment having
owned his own cars for years.”
Plans for Newman to drive for Bertrand at Lee
last year were rained out. Currently driving the
US Army car for the Stewart-Hass team, Newman
was one of the top open cockpit drivers in the
nation before moving to NASCAR. He has a Midget
and Silver Crown championship on his resume.
Carter, who will drive midgets, sprints and
silver crown cars this year, is the third
generation of Carter racers beginning with
grandfather Duane and his late uncle Dana. Father Pancho, a sprint and
champ car stalwart for many years, made 17
Indianapolis 500 starts. |

Bertrand Motorsports Completes Successful First
Race Weekend |
This
past weekend, brothers Tim & Todd Bertrand in
their pair of K&N Filters 270cc Micro Sprints
visited Whip City Speedway in Westfield, MA. Tim
started fourth in his heat and won it handily,
and Todd started eighth in his heat and finished
fourth. In the feature, Tim started third on the
grid and battled with the front runners all
night, ending up with a well earned second place
finish. Todd worked his way up to third,
quickly, behind older brother Tim, but a broken
spark plug cap caused severe detonation and a
burned piston in the engine. Todd’s night ended
on lap eight. Twenty-eight 270CC cars signed
into the pits on Saturday evening.
The Bertrand Motorsports / K&N Filters team
returns to Whip City Speedway this coming
Saturday evening. Back in the shop in Plymouth,
MA Randy & Glen Cabral get ready to put the
finishing touches on the Bertrand / K&N #47
midget for some Spring testing and opening day
at Monadnock Speedway on May 23.

of our 2009 supporters for their help as
